Turkey: 184 people arrested in the investigation related to the buildings collapsed by the earthquake



184 suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the investigation related to the buildings that collapsed as a result of this month's earthquake in Ruqiya, while the scope of the investigation is being expanded in this regard.

After the recent earthquake, there is increasing public outcry due to the collapse of the buildings and people are seeing it as a malpractice in the construction of the buildings.

 160,000 buildings, including 520,000 apartments, have either completely collapsed or been severely damaged by the earthquake.

Turkey's Minister of Justice Beker Buzdag said in a conversation with journalists in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir that 600 people are being investigated in relation to the collapsed buildings.

 

He said that among those arrested are 79 contractors and 74 persons whose buildings were their legal responsibility.

According to the minister, 13 property owners and 18 people who had made changes in the houses have also been arrested.

 Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who faces a tough presidential election in June this year after two decades in power, has promised accountability.

According to official media, the mayor of Nardaghi district, who belongs to the ruling party AKP, has also been arrested in connection with the investigation related to the collapsed buildings.



According to Turkey's Disaster Management Agency, around 2 million displaced people are forced to live in temporary shelters after the earthquake.

More than 335,000 tents have been installed in the earthquake-affected areas, while houses made of containers have been set up in 130 places.

According to the organization, around 530,000 people have been rescued from the earthquake-affected areas.
